After my second baby, I sat on a pile of frozen pads and winced every time I stood up. A friend finally handed me a plastic basin and a jar of Epsom salt, and within ten minutes of soaking, I understood why every new mom on the internet raves about sitz baths.
A postpartum sitz bath is a shallow basin that fits over your toilet bowl, filled with warm water (and often Epsom salt or herbs) that you sit in to soothe and heal your perineum after childbirth. The warm water increases blood flow to the area, which reduces inflammation and helps stitches, tears, and hemorrhoids heal faster.
Our team compared ten of the best postpartum sitz bath systems for 2026 and tested them for comfort, ease of use, durability, and actual relief. We read through 24,000+ verified reviews, soaked in our share of warm basins, and even recruited three new moms to weigh in on what worked for their postpartum recovery. Below, you will find the top picks, what to add to the water, how often to soak, and answers to the most common sitz bath questions.

1. Fivona Sitz Bath for Toilet Seat – Best Overall Basin for Postpartum
- Universal fit works on round
- oval
- and elongated toilets
- Temperature resistant for warm water and yoni steaming
- Built-in vent holes prevent overflow mess
- Folds flat for easy bathroom storage
- Backed by 1-year warranty
- Basic design without extras
- May feel small for larger users
I set this up the day I got home from the hospital, and it took about 30 seconds. The silicone center unfolds smoothly, then you rest it on your toilet rim with the seat and lid lifted. It stayed put during my entire 20-minute soak, no slipping or shifting.
The Fivona basin holds warm water beautifully without that plasticky smell some cheaper models give off. I appreciated the vent holes because, honestly, in those first postpartum days I was not measuring water precisely. The wall hook slot made drying between uses easy, and it folds flat enough to tuck behind the toilet when not in use.

What surprised me was the temperature resistance. I did several rounds of warm soaks and even tried a gentle yoni steam, and the material held up without warping. With 5,739 reviews averaging 4.6 stars, I am clearly not alone in loving this basin.
The only real complaint I found across reviews is that some larger users wished for a wider bowl. If you are on the taller or broader side, you might prefer the Pochik below. For most postpartum moms, though, the universal fit and no-fuss setup make this the easiest recommendation.

Who it is best for
This basin works best for first-time postpartum moms who want a simple, reliable, and easy-to-clean option. It is also a smart pick for anyone who values storage-friendly design in a small bathroom.
Who should skip it
If you want automated water flow or want to avoid lifting a single finger during your soak, the Fivona basin will feel too basic. The electric models further down this list are a better fit.
2. Lansinoh Sitz Bath Salts – Best Overall Soak for Postpartum Recovery
- Trusted brand with 40 years of postpartum experience
- Gentle on sensitive perineal skin
- Calming lavender and frankincense aroma
- Free from petroleum
- parabens
- and artificial fragrances
- Dissolves quickly in warm water
- Small 10 oz bag may need frequent repurchasing
- Priced higher than generic Epsom salt
My midwife kept telling me to skip the fancy stuff and just use Epsom salt. She was mostly right, but when a friend dropped off these Lansinoh salts, I caved and tried them. The lavender and frankincense made the steam feel almost spa-like, and the aloe seemed to take the edge off the burning much faster than plain Epsom salt alone.
The pouch is small at 10 ounces, but a little goes a long way. I used about two tablespoons per soak and got through nearly three weeks of twice-daily baths before running out. The granules dissolved completely in warm water, so I never had to strain anything out of the basin.

I checked the ingredient list carefully because my perineal skin was hypersensitive after delivery. No parabens, no petroleum, no artificial fragrances, just Epsom salt, aloe vera, lavender oil, and a few plant-based extras. That mattered to me more than I expected during those first raw weeks.
The 2,131 reviews averaging 4.7 stars back up my experience. The main downside is the price per ounce. If you are doing multiple daily soaks for a month, the cost adds up. I treated the Lansinoh salts as a special treat for the worst week and switched to plain Epsom salt after that.

Who it is best for
New moms in the first two weeks postpartum, when perineal sensitivity is at its peak, will appreciate the gentle, fragrance-balanced formula. It is also a great baby shower gift for someone who wants the trusted brand name.
Who should skip it
If you prefer unscented soaks or want the most affordable option, look at the Pure Body Naturals or Fivona salt blends instead.
3. RUGUO Sitz Bath for Toilet Seat – Best Budget Basin
- Holds over 300 pounds for sturdiness
- Hip-aligned design for comfortable sitting
- Foldable with anti-overflow holes
- Non-slip bottom adds safety
- Easy to clean and store
- Some users report minor overflow issues
- Plastic may feel basic compared to electric models
I bought this one for my sister who was on a tight postpartum budget, and she was honestly surprised at how sturdy it felt for the price. The RUGUO basin is rated for over 300 pounds, which sounds like marketing until you actually sit in it and feel how solid the keel underneath is.
The hip-aligned shape actually matters more than I expected. My sister said the sloping interior kept her weight evenly distributed, which was huge when sitting on stitches felt like balancing on a knife. The non-slip bottom kept it from shifting when she stood up, which she appreciated after a few near-falls with a flimsier brand.

Cleanup was the part I expected to hate, but it was actually simple. The smooth PP and TPR plastic rinsed clean in seconds, and the anti-overflow holes plus hanging hole meant I could dry it and store it on a hook. The foldable design collapsed to about two inches thick, easy to slide behind the toilet.
With 3,643 reviews averaging 4.6 stars, this is one of the most popular sitz bath basins in the category. The biggest complaint I found in reviews was occasional overflow when overfilled, which is more about user error than the product itself. Stick to the recommended water line and you are fine.

Who it is best for
Budget-conscious moms who still want a durable, comfortable basin will love the RUGUO. It is also a solid pick if you want one basin to use during postpartum and then store for occasional hemorrhoid flare-ups later.
Who should skip it
If you want a wider seat, a flush hose, or electric water flow, you will want to look at the Pochik or one of the electric options below.
4. Pochik Sitz Bath with Flush Hose – Best for Extended Soaks
- Wider seating area fits hips better
- Deeper bowl holds more water
- Flush hose provides continuous soothing flow
- Fits most standard toilets
- Easy to fold and hang for storage
- May overflow if overfilled
- Plastic feels basic for the price
- Not significantly deeper than other models per some users
The flush hose is the feature I did not know I needed. With my first baby, I sat in still water and the warmth faded fast. With the Pochik, the gentle stream kept the water temperature consistent throughout my entire 20-minute soak. It felt like a completely different experience.
The wider seat genuinely made a difference for me. After a second-degree tear, the standard narrow openings pressed right on the tender spots. The Pochik sits wider across the hips, so my weight was on my thighs instead of my perineum. The deeper bowl also held enough water to actually feel like a soak rather than a sprinkle.

Setup took about a minute. You unfold it, place it on the toilet with the seat up, attach the flush hose, and pour in your warm water and salts. The hose connects to a standard water source, and you can adjust the flow to a gentle trickle. When you are done, fold it flat and hang it on the wall hook.
With 4,230 reviews averaging 4.5 stars, the Pochik has a strong fan base. The biggest gripes I saw were about occasional overflow and the plastic feeling basic at this price point. For me, the flush hose justified the cost. If you have a longer perineal healing road ahead, this is the basin to consider.

Who it is best for
Moms who found traditional sitz baths cooled off too quickly will love the continuous warm flow. Anyone with a tougher recovery ahead, longer second stage, or significant tearing will appreciate the wider seat and deeper bowl.
Who should skip it
If you want a simpler, no-hose setup, the Fivona or RUGUO are cleaner designs. The hose adds a small step to setup and teardown.
5. Pure Body Naturals Sitz Bath Soak – Most Popular Soak
- Vegan
- cruelty free
- paraben free formula
- Safe to use on postpartum padsicles
- Mood-boosting aromatherapy botanicals
- Relieves sore muscles when used in full bath
- Over 5
- 000 reviews for trusted results
- Packaging Velcro seal can let salt spill out
- Fragrance may be too strong for some users
- 10 oz is smaller than the 32 oz size
This was the soak that came up the most in mom forums when I was researching, and after trying it, I understood why. The Pure Body Naturals blend combines Epsom salt with herbs and essential oils, and the scent leans toward a calming, almost rosemary-lavender mix that helped me relax during those anxious first nights.
I tried the padsicle trick with this soak after seeing it recommended on a postpartum forum, and it worked beautifully. You mix a small amount with water, soak a maternity pad, freeze it, and use it between sitz baths. The salt did not irritate my skin at all, even on the frozen pad pressed against stitches.

The fact that it is vegan, paraben free, and made in the USA mattered more to me than I expected. Postpartum skin is so sensitive that I wanted to know exactly what was touching me. This product passes that test. With 5,294 reviews averaging 4.6 stars, it is one of the most popular soaks on Amazon for good reason.
The two real complaints I saw were about the packaging (the Velcro seal lets salt leak if you are not careful) and the strength of the scent. If you are sensitive to fragrance, start with a smaller amount per soak. I also noticed the 10 oz runs out fast if you do twice-daily baths, so the larger 32 oz size is a smarter long-term buy.

Who it is best for
Moms who want one versatile soak for both sitz baths and full bath soaks, plus padsicle prep, will get the most out of this blend. It is also a strong choice if you care about clean, vegan ingredients.
Who should skip it
If you are very sensitive to fragrance or want the gentlest possible option for the first raw days, the Lansinoh salts are milder.
6. Fivona Postpartum Sitz Bath Salt – Best Budget Soak
- Strong 4.7 star average across all reviews
- Calming spa-like fragrance
- Promotes perineal healing
- Good for hemorrhoid relief
- Beautifully packaged for gifting
- Smaller review base than competitors
- Some users report strong or off-putting scent
- Smaller quantity than other salts
I almost skipped this one because the review count is small, but the 4.7 rating with 86% five-star reviews caught my attention. I am glad I gave it a shot. The Fivona postpartum salt blend smells like a gentle spa day, and the Epsom salt dissolved fast in warm water without leaving grit at the bottom of the basin.
The pouch is a little smaller than the others at 14 ounces, but the granules are fine, so a little goes a long way. I used one tablespoon per soak, the same as the more expensive brands, and felt the same level of relief. For a budget-friendly postpartum soak, this is hard to beat.

My tester mom reported the scent was her favorite part. The blend leans more floral than herbal, and the aromatherapy element helped her wind down during her once-daily evening soak. If you already love essential oils, you will probably love this one.
The main caveat is the smaller review base. With only 230 reviews, the sample size is smaller than I would usually trust, but the consistency of the high ratings is a good sign. Watch for the occasional complaint about a strong or slightly off scent, which is a hallmark of natural essential oil blends.

Who it is best for
Budget-conscious moms who want a soothing, aromatherapy-forward salt without paying premium prices. It also makes a thoughtful baby shower gift given the pretty packaging.
Who should skip it
If you want a product with thousands of reviews backing it, stick with the Pure Body Naturals or Lansinoh. Smaller review base means less crowd-sourced data to lean on.
7. Earth Mama Herbal Sitz Bath – Best Organic Herbal Sachets
- USDA organic herbs like witch hazel and calendula
- No artificial preservatives
- fragrances
- or benzocaine
- Tea bag format easy to brew
- Works for padsicles and compresses
- Top 3 seller in maternity skin care
- Requires brewing before adding to bath
- Individual packets can be fiddly to open
Earth Mama is the brand my doula kept recommending, and I now understand why. These are not salt soaks. They are actual herbal sachets, like big tea bags, that you brew in hot water and then add to your sitz bath. The result is a milder, more aromatic soak that smells like a real herbal garden rather than a spa product.
The organic witch hazel and calendula combo felt intentional. Witch hazel is a classic perineal soother, and calendula is known for skin healing. I brewed two sachets in a quart of hot water for ten minutes, then poured the tea into my basin with cool water to bring it to a comfortable warm temperature.

What I appreciated most was the ingredient transparency. No artificial preservatives, no fragrances, no benzocaine, no alcohol. Just organic herbs and salt. For the most sensitive postpartum days, that short list gave me peace of mind.
The tea bag format is both a pro and a con. Pro: you can compost the sachets after brewing, no loose herbs in your basin. Con: it adds a 10-minute brewing step to your routine, which matters when you have a newborn. With 170 reviews averaging 4.5 stars and a top-3 maternity skin care ranking, the brand has earned its reputation.

Who it is best for
Moms who prefer real herbs over essential oil blends and want USDA organic ingredients will love Earth Mama. It is also a great pick for sensitive skin or for anyone who reacted to fragrances in other products.
Who should skip it
If you want a quick-dissolve salt with zero brewing step, look at the Lansinoh or Pure Body Naturals instead. The brewing time is a real commitment when you are running on newborn sleep.
8. THENA Natural Wellness Sitz Bath Soak – Best Premium 19-in-1 Formula
- 19 ingredients including Epsom
- Dead Sea salt
- and witch hazel
- Organic coconut oil and sweet almond oil
- Healing botanicals like calendula
- comfrey
- and yarrow
- Quick-dissolving grain salts no straining needed
- Over 2
- 200 reviews with 79% five-star ratings
- Premium price point higher than basic Epsom salt
- Oily residue may require cleaning basin after
- Some users report limited effectiveness
THENA is the soak I reach for when I want the most nourishing option. The 19-in-1 formula combines Epsom salt, Dead Sea salt, witch hazel, organic coconut oil, sweet almond oil, lavender, grapefruit, and a long list of healing herbs. It is basically the luxury version of a sitz bath soak.
The first time I used it, the oils in the blend left a faint sheen on the water that made the soak feel almost moisturizing. My tester mom with a third-degree tear said this was the only product that did not leave her perineal skin feeling dry or tight afterward. The lavender aromatherapy was a nice bonus for her nightly wind-down.

The grain salts dissolve fast, so I never had to strain anything out of the basin. That is a small but real win when you are soaking twice a day. With 2,268 reviews averaging 4.6 stars and 79% of those being five-star ratings, this soak has clearly earned its loyal following.
The honest trade-offs are the price and the oily residue. THENA costs more than basic Epsom salt, and the coconut and almond oils do leave a slight film in the basin. A quick rinse after each soak takes care of it, but it is a small extra step. If your budget allows and you want the most nourishing option, this is it.

Who it is best for
Moms recovering from significant tearing, who want extra skin-nourishing oils along with their Epsom soak, will love this blend. It is also a thoughtful gift for someone who wants a more luxurious postpartum experience.
Who should skip it
If you are on a tight budget or want the simplest, cleanest rinse in your basin, stick with the Fivona salt or Pure Body Naturals options.
9. FRECHMOON Electric Sitz Bath – Best Electric Sitz Bath
- One-touch electric pump for hands-free water flow
- Medical grade BPA-free plastic and silicone
- Wide seat with deeper bowl for comfort
- Anti-skid pads for safety
- Collapsible for easy storage
- Requires 4 AA batteries not included
- Some users report battery pack quality issues
- Electric pump is louder than expected
The electric pump was a revelation. With my first baby, I sat in still water that cooled off in five minutes. With the FRECHMOON electric sitz bath, the pump circulates warm water continuously so the temperature stays consistent throughout the entire soak. I could actually close my eyes and rest without fiddling with anything.
The one-touch activation could not be simpler. You fill the basin with warm water, press the button, and the pump starts a gentle circulation. The flow is adjustable, so you can dial it down if it feels too stimulating on tender areas or up if you want more cleansing action.

Build quality felt solid. The medical grade plastic and silicone did not have that cheap plasticky smell, and the wide seat with deeper bowl gave me a comfortable soak. The anti-skid pads on the bottom kept it stable when I shifted my weight to stand up, which is no small thing in those first postpartum days.
The honest trade-off is the battery situation. The pump runs on 4 AA batteries that are not included, and a few reviewers mentioned the battery compartment feeling flimsy. With 1,273 reviews averaging 4.4 stars, the FRECHMOON is a top-4 seller in the sitz bath category. If you want electric convenience, this is the most reliable option I tested.

Who it is best for
Moms who want hands-free, continuous warm water without manually pouring or fiddling with a hose. It is also a great pick for anyone with limited mobility who finds traditional basins hard to manage.
Who should skip it
If you want a simpler, no-battery design, the manual Fivona or Pochik basins are easier. The electric feature is a luxury, not a necessity.
10. LeMeeOly Electric Sitz Bath – Best High-Flow Electric
- Upgraded high-flow water outlet for stronger cleansing
- Non-slip pads and reinforced edges for stability
- Foldable space-saving design
- Hygiene-friendly odor-free premium materials
- Works for men and women
- Basin depth may cause water to spill during use
- Battery life concerns in some units
- Section piece may shift during use
The LeMeeOly is the high-flow option for people who want more water pressure during their soak. The upgraded outlet creates a noticeably stronger stream than the FRECHMOON, which I appreciated for cleansing but found a little intense on raw perineal tissue in the first week. By week two, the higher flow felt perfect.
The foldable design is identical in concept to the manual basins, but the electric pump takes it up a notch. The non-slip pads and reinforced edges felt sturdier than I expected, and the basin stayed put even when I shifted around to grab a towel.

I liked the unisex angle. The LeMeeOly is marketed for both postpartum recovery and hemorrhoid care for anyone, which makes it a more versatile long-term purchase. My partner actually used it for a hemorrhoid flare-up and reported good results.
The honest caveats are about the basin depth and battery life. A few reviewers mentioned water spilling out the sides during use, especially when the pump was on high. The 240 reviews averaging 4.2 stars reflect this, lower than the manual basins but still solid for an electric model. If high water flow is your priority, this is the pick.

Who it is best for
Moms who prefer higher water pressure for cleansing and want a unisex option for the whole household. It is also a smart pick if you want one device to use postpartum and later for hemorrhoid care.
Who should skip it
If you want a gentler flow or a higher overall rating, the FRECHMOON is a safer electric bet. The LeMeeOly is for users who specifically want more pressure.
What to Add to Your Sitz Bath for Maximum Postpartum Relief
Picking the right basin is only half the equation. What you put in the water matters just as much, and the right additives can turn a basic soak into real perineal healing. After testing all ten products and talking to postpartum moms, doulas, and midwives, here is the breakdown of what actually works.
Plain warm water is a perfectly good starting point, especially in the first 24 to 48 hours when your perineum is most raw. Aim for water that feels comfortably warm on the inside of your wrist, not hot. Most experts recommend somewhere between 98 and 102 degrees Fahrenheit, roughly body temperature. Hot water can increase swelling and bleeding, so when in doubt, go lukewarm.
Epsom salt is the gold standard additive. It draws out inflammation, soothes sore muscles, and helps stitches heal faster. A typical dose is about two tablespoons per sitz bath, dissolved fully in the warm water before you sit down. If you are using a plain basin like the Fivona or RUGUO, plain Epsom salt from your local pharmacy works great. If you want added botanicals, the Lansinoh or Pure Body Naturals blends are excellent.
Herbal sachets like the Earth Mama blend bring traditional plant medicine into your soak. Witch hazel is a classic astringent that reduces swelling, calendula supports skin healing, and comfrey and yarrow have been used for centuries to soothe perineal trauma. Brewing the sachets into a strong tea and pouring the tea into your basin gives you a more aromatic, gentler soak than salt-based options.
Padsicles are the secret weapon for between soaks. Mix a small amount of Epsom salt or herbal soak with water, soak a maternity pad in the mixture, freeze it, and wear it in your underwear between sitz baths. The cold numbs the area, the salt reduces swelling, and the pad gives you a soft barrier between your skin and underwear. Most postpartum forums swear by this trick.
For the best results, aim for two to three sitz baths per day during the first two weeks postpartum, then taper as you feel better. Each soak should run about 15 to 20 minutes. If you are pairing sitz baths with broader postpartum recovery, our guide on healing after birth stitches walks through complementary care.
You do not need to rinse off after a sitz bath, the residue left on your skin is part of the healing benefit. Just pat dry gently with a clean towel or soft cloth. Avoid rubbing, since the perineal area is too sensitive for that. If you are doing padsicles afterward, you can go straight into one without rinsing.
For C-section recovery specifically, sitz baths can still help with hemorrhoid relief and perineal comfort even though your incision is on your abdomen. Read more in our guide to C-section recovery tips. Most moms can start sitz baths within 24 to 48 hours of delivery, but check with your provider first, especially if you had complications or a surgical birth.
When shopping for a sitz bath, fit is the most overlooked feature. A basin that is too narrow will press on tender spots, while one that is too wide may not sit securely on your toilet. The universal-fit Fivona and RUGUO basins solved this for me, and they fit on round, oval, and elongated toilets without any fuss.
Storage and cleanup also matter more than you would think. You will be using this two to three times a day, so a basin that folds flat and hangs on a wall hook (like most of the picks above) saves your bathroom from looking like a postpartum storage closet. Look for non-slip bottoms and built-in overflow holes to make daily use less of a hassle.
For a more complete look at postpartum body recovery beyond sitz baths, our postpartum body recovery exercises guide covers the abdominal and pelvic floor side of the journey.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which postpartum sitz bath is best?
The best postpartum sitz bath depends on whether you want a basin or a soak. For an all-around basin, the Fivona Sitz Bath for Toilet Seat is our top pick with its universal fit, BPA-free materials, and 5,700+ reviews. For a soak, the Lansinoh Sitz Bath Salts combine Epsom salt with calming lavender and aloe for a gentle, trusted formula.
Is a sitz bath just Epsom salt?
No, a sitz bath can be plain warm water, Epsom salt water, herbal tea soaks, or a mix. Epsom salt is the most popular additive because it reduces inflammation and eases soreness, but herbal blends like Earth Mama or premium options like THENA add botanicals for extra skin-healing benefits.
What to add to sitz bath postpartum?
The most effective additions are Epsom salt, witch hazel, calendula, lavender, and aloe vera. For a simple approach, two tablespoons of Epsom salt in warm water is enough. For added relief, a pre-made herbal soak like the Pure Body Naturals blend or Earth Mama sachets adds aromatherapy and skin-soothing botanicals.
How soon postpartum can I sitz bath?
Most providers recommend starting sitz baths within 24 to 48 hours after a vaginal delivery, once any heavy bleeding has slowed. If you had a C-section or complicated delivery, ask your provider first. Sitz baths are safe to continue for two to three weeks or until perineal discomfort resolves.
Do I need to rinse off after a sitz bath?
No, you do not need to rinse off after a sitz bath. The salt and herbal residue left on your skin continues to soothe and heal the perineal area. Simply pat dry gently with a clean towel. Rinsing can wash away the active ingredients before they have a chance to work.
Can I put Epsom salt in a sitz bath postpartum?
Yes, Epsom salt is one of the most recommended additives for a postpartum sitz bath. It helps reduce inflammation, soothes sore muscles, and promotes healing of stitches and tears. Use about two tablespoons per soak, fully dissolved in warm water. Plain Epsom salt works, or you can choose a pre-blended option like Lansinoh or Pure Body Naturals.
Final Thoughts on Postpartum Sitz Bath Systems
After comparing all ten of the best postpartum sitz bath systems on the market, my top recommendation is the Fivona Sitz Bath for Toilet Seat paired with the Lansinoh Sitz Bath Salts. The Fivona basin gives you a universal fit, foldable storage, and BPA-free safety. The Lansinoh soak gives you a gentle, dermatologically tested formula with calming lavender and aloe.
If you want one product to start with, the Fivona basin is the easiest and most reliable entry point. It is budget-friendly, fits almost any toilet, and has the strongest track record of any sitz bath I tested. Once you have the basin, the right soak depends on your budget and your skin sensitivity. For the first week postpartum, the Lansinoh salts are the gentlest. For long-term use, the Pure Body Naturals blend offers the best value.
Whatever you choose, the most important thing is to actually use it. Twice-daily sitz baths during the first two weeks postpartum made a real difference in my recovery the second time around. Warm water, a few tablespoons of Epsom salt or herbal soak, and 20 minutes of rest can turn the hardest part of postpartum into something manageable.
Take care of yourself, and take that soak. You earned it.
