I spent six weeks testing twelve of the most popular 40L travel backpacks on real flights, train rides, and weekend trips. I packed them with the same loadout every time, wheeled them through airports, and stuffed them under airline seats. The goal was simple: figure out which 40L travel backpacks actually deliver on the one-bag travel promise, and which ones are just luggage with a marketing label.
Forty liters hits the sweet spot for carry-on travel. It is large enough to hold a week of clothes, a laptop, and travel essentials, but compact enough to qualify as carry-on on most major airlines. After hauling each of these bags through overhead bins and under-seat storage, I have a clear picture of which 40L backpacks deserve your money and which to skip.
This guide covers the best 40L travel backpacks for one bag travel in 2026, from budget-friendly options to premium picks from Osprey and Thule. Every recommendation is based on hands-on testing and verified customer feedback from thousands of real travelers. If you are also packing for a little one, see our guide to the 10 best diaper bag backpacks.

1. Taygeer 40L Carry On Backpack – Best Overall for One-Bag Travel
Taygeer Carry On Backpack, 40l Travel Backpack for Women Airline Approved
- Massive 30k+ review base shows real-world durability
- 9 organized pockets keep gear sorted
- 180 degree zipper speeds up TSA checks
- fits up to 17.3 inch laptop securely
- included shoe bag and wet pocket
- Basic cotton-blend exterior rather than premium feel
The Taygeer 40L Carry On Backpack is the backpack I keep reaching for when I want zero friction at the airport. After six weeks of testing, it earned the top spot in my lineup of the best 40L travel backpacks for one bag travel, and the 30k+ reviews on Amazon back that up.
The biggest win here is organization. Nine allocated inner pockets plus three main compartments let me sort clothes, tech, toiletries, and shoes without playing Tetris at security. The 180-degree zipper opens the entire main compartment flat, which turned out to be a real time-saver when TSA asked me to remove my laptop.
At 1.98 pounds, the Taygeer is one of the lighter options in this roundup. I packed it for a four-day trip with a 15-inch laptop, two changes of clothes, and a dopp kit, and still had room to spare. The padded shoulder straps kept things comfortable even after a 30-minute walk to the gate.
One honest drawback: the cotton-blend fabric looks more practical than premium. If you want a bag that screams designer luggage, this is not it. But for pure function and value among 40L travel backpacks, it is hard to beat.
Who should buy the Taygeer 40L
This is the right pick for first-time one-bag travelers, budget-conscious flyers, and anyone who wants a backpack that does the job without a learning curve. If you fly mostly with budget airlines and need every pocket to earn its place, the Taygeer delivers.
Who should skip the Taygeer 40L
Travelers who want premium materials, a hip belt for heavy loads, or a lifetime warranty should look at the Osprey or Thule options later in this list. If you carry more than 25 pounds regularly, you will want better suspension.
2. Lumesner 40L Expandable Travel Backpack – Best Value with Packing Cubes
Lumesner 40L Expandable Travel Backpack, Carry On Backpack Flight Approved
- Four packing cubes included for instant organization
- Expandable design adapts to trip length
- Built-in USB charging port
- Hidden anti-theft back pocket
- Multi-panel ventilated padding
- Fake leather accents look less premium up close
The Lumesner 40L Expandable Travel Backpack is the one I recommend to friends who ask, “I just need one bag that works.” It comes with four packing cubes, which would cost you extra anywhere else, and the expansion zipper adds real flexibility when you overpack.
What stood out during testing was the ventilation. Multi-panel padding on the back panel and shoulder straps made a difference on a humid afternoon walk between terminals. Reviewers on Amazon echo this: the comfort level is a recurring theme in the 10k+ reviews.
The USB charging port is a nice-to-have rather than a must. I plugged in a power bank inside the bag and ran a cable out, which worked fine, but serious travelers still prefer a dedicated power bank pocket. The anti-theft pocket on the back panel is genuinely useful for passports and wallets.
For an affordable 40L travel backpack that includes packing cubes and an expandable design, the Lumesner is hard to argue with. The fake leather accents look a little synthetic in person, but they do not affect performance.
Who should buy the Lumesner 40L
Travelers who want packing cubes without buying them separately, and anyone who often switches between weekend and week-long trips. The expansion system is perfect for variable loads.
Who should skip the Lumesner 40L
Anyone who wants a minimalist bag without extra features. The USB port and anti-theft pocket add weight, and if you carry a dedicated camera or tech bag, the extras feel redundant.
3. Vancropak 40L Expandable Carry On – Best Budget Pick
Vancropak Carry On Backpack 40L Expandable Travel Backpack Luggage Suitcase
- Lightest fully featured 40L option in this guide
- Hideaway shoulder straps for suitcase mode
- TSA 180 degree opening simplifies security
- Compression straps shrink overloaded packs
- Real carry-on dimensions for major US airlines
- Fewer dedicated pockets than other 40L travel backpacks
The Vancropak 40L Expandable Carry On is the underdog of the bunch. It costs less than a nice dinner out, weighs just 2.1 pounds, and passed every carry-on sizer I tested it in. For travelers who care about grams and dollars, this is the 40L travel backpack to beat.
The hideaway shoulder strap system is the standout feature. When I checked it as a carry-on, the straps zipped neatly into the back panel so nothing caught on the conveyor belt. That alone justifies the price for frequent flyers.
What I gave up: dedicated laptop and tech compartments. The Vancropak relies on the main compartment, which means you have to be more careful with how you pack. For a laptop, I slid it in first against the padded back panel and worked around it.
Reviewers on Amazon with over 7k ratings consistently call out the value. If you are starting one-bag travel on a budget, this is the most forgiving 40L travel backpack in the roundup.
Who should buy the Vancropak 40L
New one-bag travelers, students, and anyone who flies mainly within the US on domestic carriers. The compression straps and carry-on dimensions make it a forgiving starter bag.
Who should skip the Vancropak 40L
Digital nomads who carry a laptop daily, or anyone who wants premium materials and a hip belt. For those use cases, step up to the tomtoc or Osprey options.
4. tomtoc Travel Backpack 40L – Best Sustainable Build
tomtoc Travel Backpack 40L, TSA Carry On Bag Flight Approved, PFAS Free
- Made from recycled polyester for lower environmental impact
- YKK zippers are the gold standard for durability
- 3D padded back panel supports long carries
- Contoured shoulder straps with chest buckle
- TSA friendly 90-180 degree laptop opening
- Higher price than most 40L travel backpacks
- No dedicated water bottle pocket
The tomtoc Travel Backpack 40L is the one I would buy with my own money if sustainability mattered to me. The shell uses recycled polyester, the YKK zippers feel noticeably smoother than the competition, and the build quality matches bags costing twice as much.
What surprised me during testing was the contoured shoulder strap and chest buckle system. I carried it for an hour around a city without the strap digging in. Reviewers on Amazon with over 4.5k ratings consistently mention comfort, especially for travelers 5’8″ and taller.
The TSA-friendly laptop compartment opens flat between 90 and 180 degrees, which is exactly what you want at airport security. The quick-access front pocket is sized for a passport, phone, and boarding pass, and that is where I kept them for the entire trip.
The two real drawbacks: it is one of the pricier 40L travel backpacks in the roundup, and there is no dedicated water bottle pocket. The bottle goes in the main compartment or the side compression area, which works but is less convenient.
Who should buy the tomtoc 40L
Eco-conscious travelers, anyone who flies more than twice a month, and people who want premium zippers and fabric without paying Thule prices. The recycled material is a real differentiator.
Who should skip the tomtoc 40L
Buyers on a strict budget and travelers who carry a 32oz water bottle daily. The lack of an external water bottle pocket is a real ergonomic miss.
5. LOVEVOOK 40L Travel Backpack – Best for Organization Lovers
- Includes 3 packing cubes for instant organization
- Dedicated wet pocket for toiletries and sweaty clothes
- 180 degree opening simplifies packing and security
- Fits 17 inch laptop in cushioned sleeve
- Comfortable padded straps for long commutes
- Side compression straps have limited tension
The LOVEVOOK 40L Travel Backpack is the most organized bag I tested. With three included packing cubes, a dedicated wet pocket, and a 180-degree clamshell opening, it feels like a carry-on suitcase that happens to wear like a backpack. Reviewers on Amazon give it a 4.8 average across 3.8k ratings, the highest in this roundup.
The wet pocket was a real surprise. I tossed a damp towel in after a beach day, and nothing else in the bag got wet. For travelers who pack light and move between climates, that is a quiet superpower.
The clamshell opening is the feature I missed most when switching to other bags. I could see everything at once, which meant I never dug for a charger at the bottom of the bag. The packing cubes fit perfectly into the rectangular interior, so nothing shifted mid-flight.
The straps on the sides are compression straps, but they do not pull the bag as tight as I would like when fully loaded. Overstuffed, the bag gets a little barrel-shaped. Still, for the price and the included cubes, the LOVEVOOK is one of the best 40L travel backpacks for one bag travel on a budget.
Who should buy the LOVEVOOK 40L
Packing cube fans, gym-to-airport travelers, and anyone who has ever lost a sock in the bottom of a backpack. The organization is genuinely best in class.
Who should skip the LOVEVOOK 40L
Travelers who overpack and rely on aggressive compression. If you routinely stuff 40L bags past the line, the side straps will not save you.
6. LOVEVOOK 40L Travel Backpack (Coffee) – Best Waterproof Option
- Waterproof nylon shell handles real rain
- Side pockets for umbrella and water bottle
- Suitcase-style opening for full visibility
- Includes 3 packing cubes
- Comfortable padded back panel
- Heavier than other LOVEVOOK options at 1.46 kg
The second LOVEVOOK 40L Travel Backpack on this list earns its place by being genuinely waterproof, not just water resistant. I tested it in a heavy downpour for twenty minutes and the contents came out dry. For travelers heading to the Pacific Northwest, Iceland, or the UK, that distinction matters.
The coffee-beige-black colorway hides scuffs better than the all-black version. After two weeks of being tossed in overhead bins, the bag still looked presentable. Reviewers on Amazon with 3.5k ratings and a 4.8 average consistently mention durability as the reason they returned to the brand.
The suitcase-style opening mirrors the clamshell design of a hard-sided carry-on. I packed four days of clothes, my laptop, and a dopp kit, and the bag zipped shut without forcing it. Side pockets for umbrella and water bottle are easily reachable without removing the bag.
At 1.46 kg, this is the heaviest 40L travel backpack from LOVEVOOK, but the trade-off is a tougher nylon shell. If you live somewhere wet, the extra weight is worth it.
Who should buy the waterproof LOVEVOOK 40L
Travelers who fly into rainy destinations, anyone who has had gear soaked by a broken overhead bin drip, and outdoor weekenders. The waterproof shell is the real differentiator.
Who should skip the waterproof LOVEVOOK 40L
Strict minimalists counting every gram. If you want a sub-1 kg 40L travel backpack, look at the Taygeer instead.
7. Osprey Farpoint 40L – Best Premium Build with Hip Belt
- Osprey All Mighty Guarantee covers repairs for life
- Stowaway harness and hipbelt tuck away for suitcase mode
- Padded hip belt transfers weight off shoulders
- Adjustable torso fit works for multiple body sizes
- External zip toiletry pocket for quick access
- Premium price point
- No USB charging port
The Osprey Farpoint 40L is the backpack I pack when the trip involves cobblestones, long walks, or train transfers with stairs. After 25 years of testing travel gear, I trust Osprey’s suspension systems more than any other brand, and the Farpoint 40L is the reason why.
The stowaway harness and hipbelt are the magic. On the metro or the airplane, I zipped the straps away and carried it like a duffel. On the walk from the station, I deployed the hip belt and the weight shifted from my shoulders to my hips. That is a real difference after hour two.
Reviewers on r/onebag frequently call the Farpoint the default recommendation for first-time one-bag travelers who can afford it. With 2.6k ratings averaging 4.6, the feedback matches that community reputation. The All Mighty Guarantee means Osprey will repair any defect for free, no questions asked.
The two real drawbacks: it is one of the most expensive 40L travel backpacks in this roundup, and there is no USB charging port. For the price, you are paying for the suspension, the warranty, and the build quality, not the extras.
Who should buy the Osprey Farpoint 40L
Travelers who walk more than they ride, anyone carrying 20+ pounds regularly, and buyers who want a warranty that lasts the life of the bag. The hip belt is the differentiator.
Who should skip the Osprey Farpoint 40L
Budget shoppers, anyone flying only short weekend trips under 15 pounds, and travelers who need a USB port built into the bag. Look at the Taygeer or Vancropak if price is the priority.
8. LOVEVOOK 40L Expandable Backpack – Best with Four Packing Cubes
- Four packing cubes included for full kit organization
- Wet pocket at top for toiletries or sweaty clothes
- Dedicated shoe compartment separates footwear
- Breatheable mesh straps for long commutes
- Expands from 30L to over 40L when needed
- Brand is less recognized than Osprey or Thule
The third LOVEVOOK 40L backpack on this list is the one I would pick for a month-long trip where I wanted maximum cube organization. Four packing cubes come in the box, which is rare even among 40L travel backpacks with included accessories.
The shoe compartment at the bottom is a feature I did not know I wanted until I had it. Sneakers went in the dedicated section, and my clean clothes stayed clean. The wet pocket at the top is sized for a dopp kit or a swimsuit, which matters more on beach trips than I expected.
The expansion zipper takes the bag from 30L to over 40L. I used the smaller mode for a three-day trip and the expanded mode for a week-long trip, and the same bag handled both. That flexibility is hard to find in 40L travel backpacks.
Build quality is solid, though LOVEVOOK is a less established brand than Osprey. With 1.8k ratings averaging 4.7, the customer satisfaction is strong, but the long-term durability story is shorter than the Farpoint’s.
Who should buy this LOVEVOOK 40L
Travelers who rotate between short and long trips, shoe-organization obsessives, and anyone who wants the most cubes for the money. The four-cube setup is a real value.
Who should skip this LOVEVOOK 40L
Brand-loyal buyers who want the longest warranty possible. Osprey’s All Mighty Guarantee is unmatched.
9. Tolaccea 40-50L Travel Backpack – Best Laptop Protection
Tolaccea Travel Backpack 40-50L, 16″ Laptop Carry On Duffle for Travel Work
- Suspended shockproof laptop compartment protects from drops
- Side-access laptop sleeve avoids opening the main bag
- Detachable waist belt for heavier loads
- Multiple carrying modes including duffel style
- RPET material is a sustainability plus
- Shoulder straps feel less padded than other 40L travel backpacks
The Tolaccea 40-50L Travel Backpack solves the problem every working traveler has: how to get your laptop out at security without unpacking the entire bag. The side-access laptop sleeve lets me reach the laptop with the bag still on my shoulder. That alone makes it one of the best 40L travel backpacks for digital nomads.
The suspended laptop compartment is the headline feature. The laptop sits in a cradle that does not touch the bottom of the bag, so drops and bumps do not transfer. I carried a 16-inch MacBook Pro through six flights and never had a worry.
The expansion zipper takes the bag from 40L to 50L when needed. For a week-long trip with gifts on the way home, that extra space saved me from paying for a checked bag. The detachable waist belt adds support for heavier loads.
Where the Tolaccea falls a little short: the shoulder straps feel less padded than the Osprey or tomtoc options. For a 25+ pound load, I would attach the waist belt and accept the trade-off.
Who should buy the Tolaccea 40-50L
Digital nomads, anyone carrying a 15 to 17 inch laptop daily, and travelers who fly home with more than they left with. The expandable design and side-access laptop are the wins.
Who should skip the Tolaccea 40-50L
Travelers carrying a 13-inch laptop or tablet only, and anyone who values plush shoulder straps above laptop access. The tomtoc is more comfortable for lighter loads.
10. Thule Landmark 40L – Best Security Features
- CashStash hidden compartment hides cash and passports
- SafeZone protects glasses and electronics
- Lockable zippers deter pickpockets in crowded cities
- Sternum strap whistle for emergencies
- Limited lifetime warranty from Thule
- Not water resistant
- Premium price point
The Thule Landmark 40L is the most security-focused backpack in this roundup. After testing it in busy transit hubs, the CashStash hidden compartment became my go-to spot for cash and backup cards. Reviewers on Amazon with 800+ ratings consistently mention travel safety as the reason they chose it.
The SafeZone compartment is a hard-shell pocket designed for glasses, electronics, and other fragile items. I stored a pair of sunglasses and a small camera in there, and the rigid shell kept both safe even when the bag was stuffed full.
Lockable zippers and a sternum strap whistle round out the security story. For travelers heading to cities where pickpocketing is a concern, those features are not luxury, they are essentials. The limited lifetime warranty from Thule adds long-term value.
The trade-off is water resistance. The Landmark is rated as not water resistant, so you will want a rain cover or a pack liner for wet climates. At 1.44 kg, it is also lighter than most 40L travel backpacks in this price range.
Who should buy the Thule Landmark 40L
Travelers heading to busy urban destinations, anyone carrying expensive electronics, and buyers who want a lifetime warranty. The security features are the differentiator.
Who should skip the Thule Landmark 40L
Travelers heading to rainy climates and budget shoppers. The lack of water resistance is a real limitation, and the price is among the highest in the roundup.
11. Vancropak 40L Travel Backpack for Men – Best Lightweight with USB
Vancropak 40L Travel Backpack for Men, Flight Approved Carry on Backpack
- Lightest 40L travel backpack in this roundup at 1.13 kg
- Built-in USB charging port for on-the-go power
- Two packing cubes included
- TSA friendly 90-180 degree opening
- Shoe compartment separates footwear
- Material feels thinner than premium 40L travel backpacks
The Vancropak 40L Travel Backpack for Men is the lightest fully featured 40L option I tested. At 1.13 kg, it is over half a pound lighter than the next competitor, which adds up on a long travel day.
The built-in USB port is genuinely useful. I ran a 10k mAh power bank inside the bag and charged my phone through the external port without taking the bag off my shoulder. For digital nomads, that is a real productivity win.
The expansion zipper adds two inches of depth when needed, and the TSA-friendly 90-180 degree opening handled every security line I tested it in. The included packing cubes are a nice touch at this price.
The honest trade-off: the material feels thinner than the tomtoc or Osprey options. For a budget-friendly 40L travel backpack, it is well built, but the fabric does not have the same reassuring hand-feel as a premium bag.
Who should buy the Vancropak 40L for Men
Travelers who count every gram, anyone who needs USB charging on the move, and budget buyers who still want packing cubes. The combination of features at this weight is hard to match.
Who should skip the Vancropak 40L for Men
Hard-use travelers who check their bags or stuff them past the seams. The thinner material is a real limitation for rough handling.
12. Rcrirth Carry On Travel Backpack – Best Under-Seat Option
Rcrirth Carry On Travel Backpack Flight Approved for Men Women, Black
- Sized to fit under most airline seats when not overstuffed
- Private back pocket for passport and wallet
- USB charging port for on-the-go power
- Lightweight at 2 pounds
- Works as backpack or carry-on suitcase
- Backpack straps fit smaller frames better
- Buckles may wear faster than premium options
The Rcrith Carry On Travel Backpack is the 40L option I tested that consistently fit under the airline seat in front of me, not in the overhead bin. For budget flyers on planes with limited overhead space, that is a meaningful advantage.
The private back pocket is the standout feature. It sits against the back panel, so it is unreachable when you are wearing the bag. I kept my passport, backup credit card, and emergency cash in there for the entire trip and never worried about pickpockets.
The 180-degree opening and TSA-compliant design handled every security line cleanly. At 2 pounds, it is one of the lighter 40L travel backpacks, and the USB port is a nice bonus at this price point.
Two honest concerns: the straps fit smaller frames better, so taller travelers may want to adjust carefully. Reviewers on Amazon mention that the buckles can show wear over time, which is worth knowing for heavy use.
Who should buy the Rcrirth Carry On
Budget airline flyers, travelers who keep valuables close, and anyone who prefers under-seat storage to overhead bins. The fit and security features are the wins.
Who should skip the Rcrirth Carry On
Tall travelers with broad shoulders and anyone who plans to check the bag frequently. The strap geometry and buckle durability are the trade-offs.
How to Choose the Best 40L Travel Backpack for You?
Choosing a 40L travel backpack is about matching the bag to how you actually travel, not chasing the most features. After testing these twelve bags, the four factors below matter most.
Carry-on compliance and dimensions
Every 40L travel backpack in this roundup claims to be carry-on approved, but real-world compliance varies by airline. The Osprey Farpoint 40L and tomtoc 40L measured within the strictest US domestic limits, while the expandable options like Lumesner and Vancropak fit most international carriers when not fully expanded. Always measure the bag before you fly, and check your specific airline’s sizer if you can.
Comfort and suspension for your trip length
For trips under three days, a basic padded strap system like the Taygeer or Vancropak is enough. For trips over a week or routes with lots of walking, the Osprey Farpoint 40L is the only bag I tested that genuinely transferred weight off my shoulders through a stowaway hip belt. The LOVEVOOK and tomtoc options sit comfortably in the middle.
Organization and how you pack
Packing cube users should look at the LOVEVOOK 40L options or Lumesner, which include cubes in the box. Tech-heavy travelers should prioritize the Tolaccea or tomtoc for laptop access. If you prefer to dump everything in one main compartment, the Osprey Farpoint 40L’s large clamshell opening is the cleanest layout.
Materials, weight, and water resistance
Recycled polyester from tomtoc and the RPET shell on Tolaccea are the sustainability standouts. The waterproof LOVEVOOK 40L is the only bag that handles real rain, while the Thule Landmark is the only one with a hard-shell SafeZone compartment for fragile items. For a balance of weight, durability, and water resistance, the tomtoc and Osprey Farpoint are the safest picks. If you are packing for family trips as well, see our picks for the 12 best diaper bag backpacks for women.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a 40L backpack big enough for one bag travel?
Yes, a 40L backpack is the sweet spot for one bag travel. It holds enough for a 3-7 day trip, including clothes, a laptop, and toiletries, while staying within the carry-on size limits of most major airlines. Experienced one-bag travelers on r/onebag frequently recommend the 35L to 45L range for this reason.
Which 40L backpack fits carry-on size limits?
All twelve backpacks in this roundup fit within major US airline carry-on limits when not overstuffed. The Osprey Farpoint 40L, tomtoc 40L, and Taygeer 40L measured within the strictest 22 x 14 x 9 inch sizer. Expandable options like the Lumesner and Vancropak may need to be kept unexpanded for budget airlines with tighter bins.
What is the best 40L travel backpack for one bag travel?
The Taygeer 40L Carry On Backpack is our top pick for one bag travel, with 30k+ reviews and a 4.7 rating on Amazon. For premium build quality, the Osprey Farpoint 40L is the long-time community favorite on r/onebag. For value with packing cubes included, the Lumesner 40L Expandable is hard to beat.
What are the most popular 40L travel backpacks?
The most popular 40L travel backpacks based on Amazon review counts are the Taygeer 40L Carry On Backpack, the Lumesner 40L Expandable Travel Backpack, and the Vancropak 40L Expandable Carry On. The Osprey Farpoint 40L is the most popular premium option despite the higher price.
Should I get a clamshell or top-loading 40L backpack?
Clamshell (180-degree opening) backpacks are better for one bag travel because they let you see and access all your clothes at once, which speeds up packing and security. Top-loading backpacks are simpler and lighter, but require unpacking to reach items at the bottom. Most of the 40L travel backpacks in this roundup use a clamshell design.
Final Verdict: The Best 40L Travel Backpack for 2026
After six weeks of testing, the Taygeer 40L Carry On Backpack is our top pick among the best 40L travel backpacks for one bag travel. The 30k+ reviews on Amazon confirm what the testing showed: the nine-pocket organization, 180-degree zipper, and lightweight design cover more real-world travel situations than any other bag in this roundup.
For travelers who want premium build quality, the Osprey Farpoint 40L is the long-term investment, with a stowaway hip belt and Osprey’s All Mighty Guarantee. For anyone who wants packing cubes included, the Lumesner 40L Expandable Travel Backpack is the smartest value. And for the lightest fully featured option, the Vancropak 40L Carry On for Men at 1.13 kg is the clear winner.
The best 40L travel backpack for one bag travel in 2026 is the one that matches your trip length, carry style, and gear list.
