Good Moms Have Scary Thoughts

March 4, 2019 3 Comments

Here is something we haven’t seen before. It’s a comic-filled book about new parenting by Karen Kleiman and is based on her viral #spreakthesecret social media campaign. In these comics, parents let us in on their inner postpartum thoughts and it’s all very familiar, endearing, and illuminating.

Karen Kleiman’s upcoming book, Good Moms Have Scary Thoughts: A Healing Guide to the Secret Fears of New Moms (Familius, March 1, 2019) is a one of a kind book. It’s profound and funny and will give you a deep sigh of relief. Here are some spreads from the book:

Excerpted from  Good Moms Have Scary Thoughts: A Healing Guide to the Secret Fears of New Moms, (Familius, March 1, 2019) written by Karen Kleiman and illustrated by children’s book artist, Molly McIntyre.

Karen Kleiman has been a well known international maternal mental health expert for over 30 years. As an advocate and author, her work has been featured on the Internet and within the mental health community for decades. In 1988, Karen founded The Postpartum Stress Center, LLC, a treatment and training facility for prenatal and postpartum depression/anxiety disorders where she treats individuals and couples experiencing perinatal mood and anxiety disorders.

I think sharing RAW feelings like that, that may even just be fleeting…helps everyone else know that they are normal and these feelings are normal and sharing them out in the open, instead of shaming oneself can be so much more healing and helpful….I love it!!! the truth….no matter how it looks at times, is so freeing….

Great stuff. Raw and moving and real!
So much pressure to put on a brave, composed front. Parenting is such an emotional experience and everyone’s mental health benefits from being able to express the positive and negative aspects of the journey.
And nice prompters for educators to use for discussions!
