Homeopathy In Labor

General and Normal Labor

Change position every 45 minutes. Eat lightly as desired. Drink frequently. Urinate every hour. Avoid IVs when possible (use heplock if needed). Homeopathic med- icines: Arnica (use hourly during labor), Caulophyllum (give one dose).

Overdue: Natural Approach to Induce Labor

Have sex. Nipple stimulation. Walk. Castor oil. Evening primrose oil. Eat spicy foods. Drink Raspberry Leaf Tea. Seek holistic treatment: acupressure, chiropractic, etc. Homeopathic medicines: Arnica, Caulophyllum, Cimicifuga, Gelsemium, Pulsatilla.

False Labor

Homeopathic medicines: Caulophyllum (first choice). Cimicifuga, Pulsatilla.

Extreme Labor Pains

Homeopathic medicines: Aconite, Chamomilla, Nux vomica, Sepia

Difficult, Slow Labor: Failure to Progress

Homeopathic medicines: Caulophyllum (early labor), Cimicifuga, Gelsemium (later in labor), Kali carbonicum (back labor), Pulsatilla.

Back Labor

Move and change position. Homeopathic medicine: Kali carbonicum.

Retained Placenta

Homeopathic medicines: Caulophyllum, Cimicifuga, Gelsemium, Pulsatilla, Sepia


Homeopathic medicines: Arnica, Caulophyllum, Chamomilla, Cimicifuga, Sepia

Nervousness and Anxiety (for mother and others)

Homeopathic medicines: Aconite, Arsenicum album, Gelsemium, Phosphorus. Bach Flower Essence: Rescue Remedy



Aconitum napellus (Aconite)

Sudden and intense complaints: Feels anxious, agitated and restless. In a panic. Violent and intolerable labor pains. Thirsty for cold drinks. Feels better with fresh air and company.

Arnica montana (Arnica)

Bruising and muscle soreness: Use routinely during labor and after birth, including following a cesarean section. Use for baby if bruised.


Difficult stalled labor: Valuable childbirth remedy. Helpful for many aspects of labor and delivery, especially when not progressing in early labor. Feels sharp pains in lower uterus that move in all directions, including down thigh. Cervix fails to dilate. Trembles, feels weak and exhausted. Can also have joint pain. Use Caulphyllum in labor if no other symptoms point to other remedies.


“I can’t go through labor”: Important childbirth medicine similar to Caulophyllum. Complains of sharp pains, trembling and nervousness. Mood is characteristic: dark, pessimistic, gloom and doom. She is excitable, hysterical and fearful. May have history of difficult past experiences: e.g., miscarriage, abortion.


Anticipation and weakness: For nervous anticipation before due date. Use at end of labor when Caulophyllum fails to act. Labor ceases at end, even though fully dilated Feels weak and sleepy.


Emotional with changeable contractions: For labor with dysfunctional contractions that change from weak to strong. Desires company but easily irritated and moved to tears. Feels warm and prefers fresh air. Also used for breech presentation, indigestion, and breastfeeding.


Worn out and dragging: Common female medicine, used for distressing labor pains with bearing-down sensation. Feels exhausted, better with exercise. Wants to be left alone. Lump sensation in anus. Also useful for morning sickness, hemorrhoids, and constipation. Craves vinegar and sour foods.
